At 78, he is the oldest person to have assumed office.
He is the second Catholic president (after John F. Kennedy) and the first president whose home state is Delaware.
He is the second non-incumbent vice president (after Richard Nixon in 1968) to be elected president.
He is also the first president of the Silent Generation.
